Many travellers of the Eyre highway turn off at Wirrulla to take the scenic route through the Gawler Ranges Rd. to Coober Pedy. The even more intrepid travel the final leg along the Kingoonya Rd. Getting up-to-date information about the current condition of both these routes is advisable before you head off and will be available at Wirrulla General Store or the pub. You need to be prepared for some rough roads if you’re going either way.

Whether you’re taking one of these or continuing along the Eyre, take the time for a stopover for a break, a welcome shower, a good feed, and a good rest before continuing on your way. The store also has groceries, fruit & veg, Post Office facilities, and fuel.

Across the road from Wirrulla’s Hotel, the camp facility is suitable for those of you towing a caravan. Located on some old tennis courts, this campground offers hot showers, public toilets, and 4 powered sites. They also have a children’s playground, picnic area, and public payphone. For travellers looking for an alternative, Wirrulla Hotel also provides motel room style accommodation. Meals and drinks are also available at the bar and restaurant.

In the very early years of European settlement, many pioneers travelled from Port Augusta through the Gawler Ranges to Ceduna and other west coast settlements. At the time, Wirrulla was a small but important way station for these travellers.
