South Bald Rock (Remote bush camp) offers great camping experience. It features a camp site with no definite signs or markers. Campers need good navigation skills and should leave trip details with a friend or family member.
GPS references under GDA94 datum Zone 56J: Site 1 South Bald Rock (0403300/6803920) on eastern side of management trail.
Access: Walk-in only
Campsites are suitable for: tent camping only. Maximum group size is 8.
Campsite surface: naturally vegetated areas
SITE ACCESS
Girraween is situated approximately 260 km by road south-west of Brisbane. To reach the park, turn off the New England Highway 26 km south of Stanthorpe or 30 km north of Tenterfield. The winding bitumen road continues a further 9 km east through the Wyberba Valley to the park information centre.
The alternative road from Stanthorpe to Girraween via Eukey and Storm King Dam has some gravel sections.
Please note: GPS Coordinates are approximate and provided in most cases to get you to the entrance. Once inside the park there should be signs to the actual camp grounds. Failing this please check with National Parks for further directions.
FEES & BOOKINGS
Camping permits are required and fees apply. A camping tag with your booking number must be displayed at your campsite. Permits must be pre-booked and it advisable to book well in advance for school holidays and long weekends. Book up to 12 months in advance.
Fees for camping permits are:
$6.55 per person per night or $26.20 per family group per night.
$3.60 per person per night for students and accompanying adults on approved excursions.
FAMILY RATE. For camping fees, a family group is defined as one or two adults and accompanying children under 18, up to a total of 8 people. Children under 5 years of age are free. Read more about CAMPING COSTS & BOOKINGS.
FACILITIES
There are no facilities available on the camp sites.
RULES
Only one group of maximum group size is allowed at each location
Maximum number of people bush camping in the park at any one time is 48.
Keep to defined vehicle tracks and walking trails.
Camp in designated areas to avoid damage to fragile vegetation.
Take rubbish home with you – if you carry it in, carry it out.
