Bush camping is available on High and Russell islands. Both camping areas have very limited facilities and campers must be self-sufficient. Bring a tarpaulin, drinking water, a fuel stove, food, tent, toilet paper and rubbish bags. See essentials to bring for further information.

Camping permits are required for both camping areas and fees apply for camping on High Island. A tag with your booking number must be displayed at your camp site.

Poles are provided at each site for erecting tarpaulins. Campers must only use the sites delineated by tarpaulin posts and seats.

SITE ACCESS
Features: the most popular island in the Cairns section of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.

Location: on the north-east side of Russell Island.

Access: by private boat from either the Mulgrave or Russell river boat ramps. Sandbars at the mouth of Mutchero Inlet at Russell Heads makes crossing the shallow river mouth tide-dependent—check tide times before you go. Frankland Islands Cruises will drop off and collect campers at Russell Island.

Number of sites: two sites (separate but not numbered) with a maximum of 8 people per group.

Camp sites are suitable for: small to medium tents. The maximum total number of campers allowed on the island at any one time is 16, or 24 in the case of school groups (where 20 students plus four supervisors are permitted).

Please note: GPS Co-Ordinates are approximate and provided in most cases to get you to the entrance. Once inside the park there should be signs to the actual camp grounds. Failing this please check with National Parks for further directions.
