THINGS TO DO
Port Gregory is primarily known for its sheltered natural harbour, excellent fishing, snorkelling and diving. It offers an ideal base for day trips to Northampton and Kalbarri.
Located 47km northwest of Northampton along a sealed road, Port Gregory provides a beautiful scenic drive through hills and valleys and wildflowers in Spring. The sheltered waters and exposed reef at low tide are a feature of the endless white beach and are adjacent to the stunning Pink Lake or Hutt Lagoon.
The Pink Lake is a wide expanse of pink sea caused by the naturally occurring algae ‘Dunaliella Salina’ which produces the orange-red colouring pigment called ‘Beta Carotene’. As the sun sinks, the lagoon changes colour from mauve or pink to a slightly darker purple.
Port Gregory is steeped in history. Close to Port Gregory is the Lynton Convict Hiring Station, which was closed in 1856. This convict hiring station employed convicts to work at the local Geraldine Mine and local pastoral stations. Some of the buildings have been restored and the convict hiring depot and Sanford’s House are a must see when visiting the area.
Visit the Hutt River Province and see HRH Prince Leonard and the famous Pash Paintings. Bird watch for the blue wren, sea eagles, terns and osprey. Wind-surf or kayak in the sheltered bay or sand board the rolling sand dunes.
You can also swim in the crystal clear safe waters or snorkel over to the coral reef. Fish from the beach, jetty or boat for whiting, tailor, mulloway, snapper, coral trout, mackerel and bluebone.
View the fish, squid and large stingrays from the jetty at night. Walk or 4WD along the beach to Nobby’s Hole where the reef meets the beach. Picnic at the mouth of the Hutt River, home of the baby pelicans. Watch dolphins and whales at play from the relaxed shores of Port Gregory.
