Planet Earth Adventures Caravan Park (CP)

Planet Earth Adventures Caravan Park is situated in the small township of Mt. Surprise in the Gulf Savannah Region. The park is the perfect spot to base yourself while you fossick for topaz at nearby O’Brien’s Creek (40klm) or while touring and exploring the gorges, volcanic lava tubes and all the geological wonders the area has to offer.

This pet friendly park offers powered and unpowered sites suitable for tents, camper trailers, caravans, motorhomes and larger RV’s. Sites are set on green, grassy, manicured lawns with some shady sites available and a shaded area with a gas BBQ and tables. There are a good range of facilities including toilets, hot showers and disabled amenities and guests are free to wash their cars and caravans.

Enjoy a scrumptious meal at the parks onsite café and restaurant, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with a variety of meals to choose from including, Full Roast Dinners, Chinese, Pizza and Fish & Chips. The park also offer fresh bakery bread and being the home of the famous Mt Surprise Pie, the mouth-watering pies are a must to try. If you need extra supplies, the Mt Surprise township has a small general store, service station, post office, police station, pub, gem dealer, cafe and rail station.

Friendly park owner, Russell, does a free snake show in the afternoons. He even allows guests to take a closer look at one of his snakes and even experience how to handle it. Russell not only talks about the snakes, he also tells you all about first aid for snake bites which is pretty important as there are a lot of snakes in this part of the world.

A booking agent for Undara Lava Tube Tours, Russell will also provide pet sitting for you so you can experience all the tours the area has to offer.

HOW TO GET THERE
Mount Surprise is on the Gulf Developmental Road between Mount Garnet and Georgetown. From the east, the Park is on the left just after the Gem Centre; from the west, it is on the right after the Motel/Van Park and just past Cox Lane on the right.

SITE ACCESS
When turning off the road you will see a big silver shed and the Mt Surprise Primary School, the entrance is between the two. Reception is in the restaurant which is in the silver shed. If there is no one there, head on into the park and set up and Russell will come around and see you.

FEES & BOOKINGS
Fee is from $15/night for unpowered sites and $25/night for powered sites

THINGS TO DO
There are plenty of activities happening around the park at different times, have a game of Bocce or try your hand at Disk Bowling. Other activities and places to see are Gem Fossicking, the Kalkani Crater, the Copperfield Gorge Tour, the Cattle station tour and the Bedrock Village.

Undara Lava Tubes (Tour bookings available on site).
The Undara Lava Tubes located in the Undara Volcanic National Park, are considered to be some of the largest and longest lava tubes on earth and thought to have formed about 190,000 years ago.

The Gem Den
Shop for the finest gems, jewellery, gifts & souvenirs in the region. Relax & enjoy refreshments with locally grown produce the see how gemstones are cut & polished to perfection. You can sieve through a bucket of ‘wash’ fossicking for Topaz or gear up with tools & knowledge and head off to the diggings.

O’Briens Creek is approximately 40klm from Planet Earth Adventures Caravan Park where you can try your hand at fossicking for some Topaz, Quartz, Aquamarine
