The Nundle Woollen Mill is an award-winning tourist attraction located in the heart of Nundle. A former Gold Rush town, it has also produced some of the finest Merino Wool in the world, so it is fitting that the Mill has been built in the area to keep the history of wool alive.
Purpose built in 2001, the Nundle Woollen Mill is one of the only remaining woollen mills in Australia. It now houses equipment that was bought together from mills that were forced to close all around the country back in the 1960’s. The equipment, some of which is over 100 years old, has been carefully restored and given a new lease of life in the Nundle Mill. You can now see it in action as it spins hundreds of yarns of wool daily, outlasting some of the modern day machinery of today. It is also instrumental in keeping the industry alive as it means we can keep wool milling onshore, rather than send all our wool overseas.
Nick and Kylie operate the mill and are passionate about their craft, as are the dedicated staff. Driven by passion, their aim is to bring an element of entertainment to craft supplies, provide fashionable and attractive garments, and at the same time create a re-connection with Australia’s wool heritage.
To do this, each weekday at 2pm they provide free guided tours, where from the top balcony you can see the mill in action as it produces yarn. Aside from the free tours, private tours, including Morning or Afternoon Tea, or with Lunch included can be organised. The tour explains the whole process of how the wool is received straight off the sheep’s back and turned into flawless yarn.
You can then browse the shop area where they stock an array of wool, all produced in the Mill and a range of fashionable woollen clothing, including the famous Nundle Woollen socks. The Mill also has an online store which you can browse via the links below.
The Nundle Woollen Mill is a must see if you are staying or visiting Nundle and it gets the tick of approval from the Free Range Camping team, especially when we saw the hand knitted jumper they made for a caravan.
