Mortlake sits at the foot of Mount Shadforth in the volcanic region of central western Victoria, about 50km northeast of Warrnambool and at the junction of the Hamilton and Hopkins Highways. The rich soils make this a very productive agricultural region and the extinct volcano has also left its mark in the formation of volcanic ‘bombs’ or geodes containing Olivine crystals – a great source of entertainment for gem fossickers.
The level, either open or sheltered, grassy sites are perfect for all types of campers and rigs, with powered or unpowered options available. Access will not be difficult for even the biggest of rigs. The facilities, including the laundry and camp kitchen, are clean and well-kept by the resident caretakers. Well behaved pets are welcome, keeping in mind all the usual courtesy and common sense guidelines.
The park will suit campers and families looking for a base to explore the region from and is located adjacent to the Tea Tree Lake picnic and recreation area. There are walking paths here, as well as bar-b-q facilities and a playground, so the kids can be kept occupied while you try out your fishing skills in the well-stocked lake. Some good catches of trout and redfin have been reported recently.
The bustling township of Mortlake not only has all the facilities you’d expect in a large rural hub, including medical, banking, supermarkets etc, but also has a number of restaurants to try out and many old bluestone buildings and other examples of early architecture included in their history trail around the town.
As well as the many small inland towns to explore, the park is also handy for a sightseeing day trip to the coast and all that the Great Ocean Road has to offer the tourist.
