Set beside the Thomson River about 4km from Longreach, this campground is more suited to the self-sufficient camper, with only a toilet block facility in the campground itself and no potable water or showers. These are available at the nearby picnic park however, so if you have them on-board or you don’t mind a short walk, using this site as a base to explore the area is a good option. The site itself is a fairly flat, open gravelled area, and in some spots a little levelling of the rig may be required. A small Fee is payable at the Visitor Information Centre for the unpowered sites, and water is available there as well.
The area is large enough for all sizes and types of vehicles, from trailers and caravans to big rigs and 5th wheelers, with plenty of space to manoeuvre. Check with the information centre regarding the state of the unsealed site if there has been any rain in the area too, as it can become quite boggy at times after heavy downfalls.
Once you’re settled in, the choice of activities and sights to see in the area is almost endless. Visit the Australian Stockman’s Hall of Fame, take a Cobb & Co, stagecoach ride, visit the numerous museums and historical displays in and around town, or simply relax beside or on the waters of the Thomson River, fishing, skiing, swimming or kayaking. Access to the river, including a boat ramp, is nearby.
Winter season (April to October), is the busiest time of the year for visitors (and the coolest) with lots of tours and sights to see. During the Summer Season (November to March) some tours do not run as the temperatures soar up to the high 30’s or mid 40’s.
