At around 8km from the Devonport Ferry Terminal, the Latrobe Mersey River Caravan Park is ideally situated to become your base from which to explore the myriad wonders of the northern Tasmanian region. As one of the state’s oldest established centres, the heritage and historical value of the Latrobe township will be obvious from the beginning.
The Latrobe area is known as the Platypus Capital of the World and staying at the park, situated next to the Mersey River, you’ll be able to see why.
The large choice of level, powered and unpowered sites will suit all kinds of campers from those favouring the tents and vans, right through to the big rigs and 5th wheelers, with plenty of room to set up. The amenities are modern and clean and include everything you would expect to make sure your stay is comfortable. There are self-contained on-site cabins available as well if you haven’t brought your accommodation with you. Digital and TV reception is excellent.
Well-behaved pets are welcome at the campsites and there is a dog park located across the road to exercise their well-behaved owners.
The park is just down the road from the Australian Axeman’s Hall of Fame and the Trout & Platypus Interpretation centre, the latter being also the home of the Big Platypus – another of Australia’s ‘Big Things’ if you’re looking to cross it off your list. Some of the area’s history before and after settlement is displayed here, as well as interesting information about the flora and fauna that call this area ‘home’.
The park is surrounded by beautiful parks and gardens and there is a shady, easy walk from the park to the town centre where you’ll find all the facilities usually available in a large town including medical facilities and supplies as well as some fine restaurants, shops, clubs and pubs and stunning seafood to enjoy.
HOW TO GET THERE
At the western end of Latrobe turn north off B19 into Gilbert Street just east of the Mersey River bridge. Follow as it becomes River Road and after 270m turn right into the Park.
