Great free camp.
This is a great Free Camp located right in the heart of Benarkin on the site of the old railway station. It still has some of the history on display in the form of old machinery throughout the site. Benarkin is located just off the D’Aguliar Highway on a service road. It is a very small community consisting of the General Store, but the site is very peaceful. It is a large grassed area with level sites, some that are shaded. It is also adjacent to the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail. The BBQ and area are cleaned daily by the locals, but they do this voluntarily. As this is a free area, we would ask that you help to keep it clean, and support the local General Store if possible.
SITE ACCESS
Access is via Scott Street which runs off the Highway, and you can drive straight through town and back onto the highway.
FEES & BOOKING
Donation is highly appreciated.
FACILITES
There are quite a few facilities at the location, including the original old toilet, and a new toilet block which also has showers. Cold Showers are free, but they ask for $2 for a hot shower. There is also a sheltered area with a playground, electric BBQ and a power outlet that is coin operated at $1 per hour. There is a peaceful garden setting with stones and statues.
THINGS TO DO
There is a great little General Store opposite the Rest area which has a wide variety of stock and food, and doubles up as a Post Office.
Teamsters Park (known as Jesse’s Well) is located about 5km away and is the site of one of the original wells for watering horses and cattle; wagons; It has an old bank building and picnic facilities.
For the history buffs, there is the 250 year old Blackbutt-Benarkin cemetery nearby. It is one of only two stone walled family cemeteries in Australia. The cemetery is heritage-listed and only opened to the public on request.
The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail runs adjacent to the campsite and stretches from Blackbutt to Linfield and beyond. It is great for walking, cycling or horse-riding.
There are also some swimming holes in the creeks nearby. The township of Blackbutt is only 5km away and has major shops, cafes, art galleries, and many services.

The walled cemetery is actually on TAROMEO Station about 2 kilometres past Jessie’s well.
It is only accessible if you can reach the manager on (07) 41630142. Ring a couple of days ahead as it takes some time to reach him for permission to enter the property. Unfortunately, after trying for 2 days I gave up and missed the opportunity this time round.
