THINGS TO DO
Part of Lake Cargelligo is a bird sanctuary, making it very popular for Bird Watching. Large numbers of water birds inhabit Lake Cargelligo and its waterways, while nearby Round Hill Reserve and Nombinnie Reserve are also ideal for bird watching.

Both of these reserves, located in Mallee Country, support a variety of rare and threatened species. Binoculars and bird guides can be hired from the Lake Cargelligo Tourist Information Centre.

Fishing is a wonderful way to pass the time in Lake Cargelligo and on the nearby Lachlan River. It is popular all year round with cod, silver perch and redfin for the taking. The inland rivers and lakes of the area provide some of the best sweet-water angling in the country.

Lake Cargelligo Museum showcases the history of Lake Cargelligo. A large number of agricultural implements are on display, as well as equipment from the old hospital and the town’s manual telephone exchange.

Kejole Koori Art Studio displays a wide range of Aboriginal arts and crafts made by local people. The studio specialises in paintings, sculptures, pottery, jewellery, didgeridoos, clapping sticks and more. Visitors to Kejole Koori Art Studio can purchase items on display at very reasonable prices.

Visit the local Cemetery for history enthusiasts. There you will find the headstone and grave of bushranger John Bow – arrested for his part in the Escort Rock Gold Robbery.

Lake Cargelligo Tourist Information Centre houses the unique Alf Tyack Stone Butterfly and Gem Collection. It is also a great stopping point for souvenirs, local art and craft, and information on Lake Cargelligo and the Heart of NSW.

The walkway and bicycle track along the Lake’s foreshores is a relaxing way to take in views of the Lake. Signs giving the history of different locations around town have been erected and points of interest include ochre pits, gold stamping, the wool wash and the Wooyeo Woolshed, as well as the railway heritage walk.
