Coleambally Caravan Park, located in the New South Wales Riverina region has recently changed hands, with new owner Suzie Poyser taking over the reins in February 2019. Since then, Suzie has been proactive refurbishing the cabins, onsite vans and amenities as well as maintaining the grounds.

Coleambally Caravan Park offers camping, caravan and onsite accommodation and is ideal for overnight and short-term stays providing travellers with a quiet and peaceful place to relax within a hop skip and jump from the main street of town. The park is pet friendly, though some conditions apply, so it’s probably best to give Suzie a call if travelling with a furry companion.

Sites are level and grassy and come with or without power. There are limited drive-through sites available if you don’t want to unhitch but you must book these in advance. The park has plenty of shade available or sun for those who want to make use of their solar. There are also on-site vans and cabins available that can sleep up to eight people, so you don’t need to be towing a van or driving a motorhome to stay. All of the cabins and some of the vans have ensuites. All have a full kitchen, TV and air conditioner for heating and cooling.

Suzie also provides budget accommodation for groups of contractors, shearers and backpackers working in the Coleambally and surrounding areas.

The park’s amenities block is clean and well maintained, and there is a laundry with coin-operated washing machines and dryers as well as an outdoor clothes line. For a small fee BBQ’s and outdoor gas heaters are available for hire from the park. The Lions Park is right next door to the caravan park and also has BBQs, picnic area and a playground to keep the kids occupied.

Coleambally is NSW’s newest town and was established as a service centre for the Coleambally Irrigation Area. Facilities include a supermarket, butcher, pharmacy, hairdresser, cafes, bank and medical clinic.

THINGS TO DO
In addition to the town’s own attractions, Coleambally is within easy driving distance of larger towns such as Jerilderie, Griffith and Narrandera and can be a nice quiet spot to stay while exploring the surrounding area.

Bucyrus Erie
Bucyrus Erie is a dragline excavator, one of several used in the construction of irrigation channels for the Coleambally Irrigation Area. It is still in working order and is on display in the Lions Park adjacent to the caravan park.

Taste Coleambally Food and Farm Festival
This biennial event celebrates the high-quality, sustainable food being produced in the region. It’s not all about the food though, with arts, culture and entertainment also part of the mix. The festival is held in October in even years.

Riverina Vintage Machinery Club Rally
Another Coleambally biennial event, this one is held in August in odd years. It features a tractor pull as well as vehicle, machinery and memorabilia displays and a vehicle trek.

Water Tower
Coleambally’s water tower has a distinctive wine glass shape and has become somewhat of a tourist attraction. Situated on a hill in the centre of town, it can be seen above the surrounding trees. The base is decorated with a mosaic depicting the town.

Nature
There are walking trails in the forests surrounding Coleambally, and the area is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna, particularly birds. In fact, all of the town’s streets are named after local bird species. Water birds are attracted to the region’s rice fields, and the threatened Superb Parrot may also be seen in the area.

Darlington Point
Darlington Point, about 27 km away, is the closest town to Coleambally. It is on the Murrumbidgee River, which is popular for swimming and fishing. There is also a walking track along the river.

Altina Wildlife Park
Located on the Sturt Highway southeast of Darlington Point, Altina Wildlife Park covers more than 200 ha and is home to a variety of both Australian and exotic animals. Tours and entry to the park are available by appointment.
