Built in 1889 as the Kynuna Hotel, it used to be one of three hotels in town. Now the Blue Heeler Hotel is the only hotel in Kynuna and is the only remaining building to have any association with the great Australian folk song, Waltzing Matilda.
There are powered and unpowered sites available for caravans, campers and motorhomes to rest during travels. Those visitors that stop by the hotel often leave a piece of themselves as Pubobilia, and the pubs walls are filled with shirts, hats and other tourists items.
HOW TO GET THERE
Kynuna is on the Landsbrough Highway (A2) between Cloncurry and Winton and the Hotel is at the Eastern end of town.
FEES & BOOKINGS
Fees are $20/night unpowered or $30/night with power.
THINGS TO DO
The pub is a great place for stopover to have a drink and great meal as it’s only pub in town.
Visit the true swagman’s billabong where the story of Waltzing Matilda is said to have taken place and where the swagman, Samuel Hoffmeister committed suicide. Just 150 by 15 metres, the oldest and shadiest coolabahs are in the middle of the water.
Combo Waterhole Conservation Park is located 16km east of Kynuna. (Dry weather entry only) It is a very picturesque place and the overshot dams built by Chinese labourers in 1883 are technical masterpieces. The Combo Waterhole is linked to the national folk song Waltzing Matilda and a monument can be found at the entrance to the park. Walk the 2.5km return circuit to the waterhole along the Diamantina River and have a picnic “under the shade of a Coolibah tree”. Camping is prohibited.
