The small town of Kingoonya is located 42 km west of the Stuart Highway between Port Augusta and Coober Pedy. The Kingoonya Caravan Park, which had been closed for around 20 years, recently reopened and is well placed for those travelling in the area.

The pet-friendly park has been refurbished and offers both camping and on-site accommodation. There are 12 powered campsites as well as a number without power. Sites are large and level, and some are shady. The campground is suitable for anything from tents through to big rigs.

For those who aren’t equipped with their own accommodation, there are cabins and donga-style rooms with single and queen options to choose from, some with ensuite. All rooms have TV, fridge, table, kettle and tea and coffee.

The park has a clean amenities block with toilets and showers for campers and those staying in non-ensuite rooms. There is a laundry equipped with a washing machine and dryer which are free to use, with a clothes line also available. Other park facilities include a gas BBQ (also free) and a fire pit. Unleaded and diesel fuel are available 24 hours a day via a self-serve bowser that accepts a wide range of credit and debit cards.

The town of Kingoonya doesn’t have a lot in the way of facilities so you’ll need to be fairly self-sufficient. However, there is a hotel in town where you can get meals and, of course, drinks.

HOW TO GET THERE
From the Stuart Highway, turn onto Tarcoola Road about 1 km north of Glendambo Roadhouse. When you reach Kingoonya, turn left at the first houses and the park is at the end of the road on the right.

SITE ACCESS
The park can accommodate large vehicles and there’s plenty of room to manoeuvre.

FEES & BOOKING
Fees are from $10/night unpowered or $15/night with power

THINGS TO DO
Kingoonya is a great place for anyone who’s into trains. The Trans-Australian Railway line runs beside the town, with The Ghan and Indian Pacific, as well as numerous freight trains, regularly passing by.

The area is also good for 4-wheel driving, with Goog’s Track, which runs between Ceduna and Glendambo, one of the most popular trails. Kingoonya Caravan Park is an ideal stopover after completing the track.

The town’s hotel hosts an annual cricket match, the Kingoonya Ashes, as well as a Kamp Oven Kook Off.
