Mud Bay Campground is located in the southern part of Barranyi (North Island) National Park, an island that has a picturesque coastline with sweeping sandy beaches, small coves and sandstone cliffs. The camp ground has no facilities, so bring everything needed. Pets are also not allowed in the park.
The Park plays an important role in the preservation and protection of culture and tradition of the Yanyuwa Aboriginal people.
SITE ACCESS
Access is by vessel only, via a 35 km journey along the McArthur River and Carrington Channel to reach Gulf waters. The closest launching site for vessels visiting the Park is at King Ash Bay, accessed via Borroloola along a formed gravel road. Moderate to strong southeasterly winds prevail during the Dry season making the shallow waters of the Gulf quite rough and extremely hazardous.
The Wet season is dominated by northwesterly winds and both cyclones and severe wind squalls are a possibility.
Please note: GPS Co-Ordinates are approximate and provided in most cases to get you to the National Park entrance. Once inside the park there should be signs to the actual camp grounds. Failing this please check with National Parks for further directions.

THINGS TO DO
The island has many long white sandy beaches suitable for walking and beach combing.
The island’s interesting mix of sea and land based birds makes it an ideal place for birdwatching. However, be careful along the water’s edge, as Saltwater Crocodiles inhabit the area.
Swimming is not recommended due to the presence of crocodiles, box jelly fish and other dangerous creatures. The waters around Barranyi National Park are excellent for fishing. Northern bluefin tuna, Spanish mackerel, queenfish and many of the trevally family abound for most of the year.
