South Johnstone camping area offers partially shady camp sites near the bank of the South Johnstone River. The camping area can be reached by foot and by conventional vehicles. It is not accessible for caravans or motorhomes.
Number of sites: 5 sites (separate but not numbered).
Camp sites are suitable for: walk-in tent camping. Camper trailers can be used in the car park.
Camp site surface: grass.

SITE ACCESS
The camp site is just off K-tree Road, 12.8km from the Palmerston Highway.
From Cairns
Travel south along the Bruce Highway towards Innisfail. Turn right onto the Palmerston Highway 5km north of Innisfail (83km south of Cairns). The Palmerston Highway runs through the Palmerston (Doongan) section of Wooroonooran National Park. The northern side of the highway is well-developed for visitors, with easy access to the Mamu Tropical Skywalk (27km along the Palmerston Highway from the turn-off), Crawfords Lookout (a further 1km from the walkway), Gooligans picnic area (4km from the walkway) and Henrietta Creek camping area (5km from the walkway).
From the Atherton and Evelyn tablelands
Travel to Millaa Millaa and follow the Palmerston Highway down the range towards Innisfail. Henrietta Creek camping area is 25km from Millaa Millaa.
Linking to the Misty Mountains
The southern side of the Palmerston Highway is part of the Misty Mountains wilderness tracks. For access to the Misty Mountains, turn south off the Palmerston Highway on to K-tree Road. This unsealed road is on the opposite side of the highway to the Tchupala and Wallicher falls walking track. South Johnstone camping area is 12.8 km along this road.

Please note: GPS Coordinates are approximate and provided in most cases to get you to the entrance. Once inside the park there should be signs to the actual camp grounds. Failing this please check with National Parks for further directions.

FEES & BOOKINGS
Camping permits are required and fees apply. A camping tag with your booking number must be displayed at your campsite.
Fees for camping permits are:
$5.75 per person per night or $23.00 per family group per night.
$3.20 per person per night for students and accompanying adults on approved excursions.
FAMILY RATE. For camping fees, a family group is defined as one or two adults and accompanying children under 18, up to a total of 8 people. Children under 5 years of age are free.

FACILITIES
3 picnic tables with large shelters and hybrid toilets. Creek water is available but should be boiled or chemically treated before drinking.

RULES
Keep to defined vehicle tracks and walking trails.
Camp in designated areas to avoid damage to fragile vegetation.
Take rubbish home with you – if you carry it in, carry it out.
