As well as the wildflowers and enormous trees in southern WA, Harvey Dickson’s Country Music Centre is one for the bucket list of Australia’s icons.

Just out of Boyup Brook, this fascinating and somewhat eclectic collection of memorabilia, art, architecture and events is sometimes a hive of activity and at others, a quiet place to stretch the legs, relax and try your luck fishing in the river. (Check online or at a Post Office for permits and rules.)

The three camping options available are best suited to the more self-sufficient traveller, as none of them include power or showers. The first has a toilet block and dam water suitable for washing but not drinking, with potable tank water nearby. The second is a short walk to the toilets and water, and the third is down on the banks of the Blackwood River, with large, shaded, quiet sites but no amenities and therefore caters for the fully self-sufficient. Access is good for all types of rigs and setups, from tents, trailers and vans up to the big rigs.

The local Hotel and the Caravan Park both allow campers access to their showers for a small fee. Supplies, including 24hr fuel, are available at Boyup Brook or any of the nearby larger town centres.

With over 100 years’ worth of farming and musical memorabilia on display, including the extensive collection in the Elvis Room, there is something fascinating to engage the visitor’s eye at every turn.

The site is also the venue for The Harvey Dickson Rodeo, Music and Camping Festival around October each year – the biggest and best for miles around.
