About a 20 minute drive from Kew (halfway between Taree and Kempsey) is Swans Crossing. Popular with locals and visitors alike, this camping and picnic area in Kerewong State Forest is set on former farmland. The Swan family ran a dairy and beef property on the site for many years, including clearing the forest and establishing grasses for the stock. This continued until 1964 when the area became State forest. The area is now surrounded by regenerated native forest and hardwood plantations. Swimming is also popular in the nearby shallows of Upsalls Creek. Longworths Tramway Heritage Walk is located a short drive away, with other walking trails leading off from the site. Caravans and Campervans are welcome, but no power is available.
FACILITIES
State forests provide many established camping areas. Some contain space for a number of tents or caravans, fireplaces and toilet facilities. Many State forests have picnic sites with facilities such as tables and BBQs. Please use established fireplaces wherever possible.
FEES & BOOKINGS
All State forests are free to camp in, so if you are staying at this site we encourage you to help keep it clean, and please visit and support the nearest town.
Camping sites cannot be pre-booked or reserved.
CAMPFIRES AND FIREWOOD
In most areas, firewood is not provided, so you are advised to bring your own, or a gas BBQ. Be aware of fire regulations, especially Total Fire Bans and promptly report all bushfires to the emergency services by dialling triple zero (000).
Solid Fuel Fire Bans apply in many State forests over summer, banning campfires and barbecues using wood, charcoal or other solid fuel. Campers are asked to bring gas appliances and prepare for days when total fire bans are declared. When planning your trip, look at the current closures and notices, http://www.forestrycorporation.com.au/visiting/closures or contact the local Forestry Corporation office http://www.forestrycorporation.com.au/about/contact-us for more information.
